I will definitely be going back! I had purchased a lunch Groupon. I was in a hurry and the owner kindly made an exception and let me order my food to go (the Groupon is for dine-in only). I ordered the Pad Thai lunch special and fresh spring rolls. The spring rolls were nice a fresh. And wrapped individually so they don't stick together and break. The Pad Thai was good - I had been craving the dish but I'm sure there are dishes the chef makes that are much better. I've had better - but from a street cart in Bangkok. The house salad that came with the lunch special was sooooo good! I'd go back just for the salad! I shared with my coworker and still had enough food for lunch AND dinner! The service was amazing. The server offered me a seat while I waited and kept my water glass full. Can't wait to try out other entrees!

Absolutely one of the best Thai places I have ever been to. Location is a little bit sketchy, but it's definitely worth coming here if you're craving Thai food. We ordered the calamari, tom yum (hands down favorite - but very spicy!), pad see ew, seafood curry pasta, and the green curry. All very good dishes, I don't doubt that their other dishes are of low quality either. The style, appearance, and flavor of the dishes are very traditionally done. Would come here often if I lived in the city.

I don't normally give Yelp reviews, but that's how good this place is. You will be doing yourself a disservice if you don't order the Khao Soi. Most Thai places don't serve this delicious Northern Thai delight, so take advantage. The service is attentive and friendly. My friends and I have been recently recognized as regulars, so hopefully I'll see you there soon.

Very nice basic Thai food in a strip mall Location. Liked that our red curry had some real heat and all fishes can be made with tofu.

Had a really good lunch. Due to location I presume, it's not very busy. Waitress did a great job and is not sore on the eyes. Had the Pad Kra Prow with Chicken lunch combo. Starts with choice of a light fresh veg soup which was excellent. Entree was awesome and the spring roll was also a big wow. One of the best Thai experiences of many. Boosted to a 5star as this place needs to succeed. It's just too good for its current rating.

Ordered through Eat24 and had good delivered to my hotel room I was staying at. I wasn't sure how it would work since it was the first time using the app. It work very well. Ordering was simple and delivery was relatively fast considering my location from the restaurant. The food was good and still hot when it arrived. I would definitely order or stop by this restaurant again.

OMG. Yes I'm using that expression. My friend made me try kaho soi and it was soooo delicious. Our server was awesome too. I will be coming back asap. YUM.

I think they're my favorite Thai place in the valley having tried about 7-8 places. Their Panang is the best I've ever EVER had. So good and savory. Minus only one star because I love drunken noodles and they were a bit dry for my liking but that's just me. Staff is always friendly.

Had a chance to try out Sala for lunch one day, and as much as I wanted to give it more starts, I disagree with other reviewers. Location was fine with ample parking, clean with great service, however the taste of the food didn't really impress me (and I've had lots of Thai food at other Thai places, including outside of SLC/UT). The egg roll and Pad See Ew I had were literally IMO... very bland and tasteless. On the other hand, my Thom Kha soup was quite good and what I expecte (although I little too much onions for my preference). Being new to the area, this is the first Thai place I've tried and have nothing to compare it to.

Came in just after lunch closing time and owner still accommodated us and was very helpful with the menu. Pad Thai was awesome. Plenty of chicken pieces. Taking half home for later. Large plate!

I got the lunch special tofu with veges and white rice with a spring roll and small side salad to go. It was hot and fresh and VERY tasty but my friend asked for no red peppers and it had a lot and no mushrooms which she wanted so that is why I only gave it 4 stars. So if taking it to go check your order BUT it was very good.

I really enjoyed this place had drunken noodles and panang curry provided good portions of both, they were spicy in a good way not too hot but if you like your food mild make sure to let them know. Had the mango and sticky rice it was great! Service was great, nice courteous and food came out quick. I was the only person in the place, but can't knock service with a smile.

Recommendations after my visit (11/08/13): 1. Khao Soi and 2. Fried Veg Spring Rolls The same as last visit. ;)

Bland low quality food. Uninspiring atmosphere, will not go back. Our waitress was nice. The place smelled odd.

We went to this place on Sat afternoon and found out they won't open till 5pm during the weekends. So we came back on Sun evening after shopping at Macy's. The place was not really busy and it is very spacious. We took time to check the menu carefully. Usually we always order pad thai and pineapple fried rice and tom kha gai soup whenever we go to a Thai restaurant. However, we wanted to have something new so we tried Khao Soi (steamed and deep fried egg noodles, in coconut curry w/ beef, red onions) - YUM YUM. The mango sticky rice dessert and Thai fried rice were fantastic. Also, the customer service is awesome. You should definitely give it a try, strongly recommended !

Yum! Good food and friendly service! I had the massaman curry. It was delicious! My friend had the red curry. We were all very pleased with the quality of the food.

Sala is pretty basic. It's not bad, but it's definitely not stellar. With the proliferation of really good Thai food in SLC, this place has fallen behind. The flavors here are somewhat muted, compared to some of the more bold, adventurous restos. Much of our food was too sweet and spice was nearly undetectable. The service is good, with a friendly and helpful waitstaff. The place is clean and comfortable and the decor is a little better than average. All in all, this is a solid place to get some good Thai food, but it's definitely not a destination restaurant.

  • Jandy S.

The staff is very friendly, the food is good and the joint is clean. What more could a girl ask for? I gave a 4 not a 5 because the spicy scale was a bit different from other Thai places. For example, the delicious Yellow Curry is listed as Mild/Medium but it was too spicy for my partner (who I'll admit is not a "fire eater") to enjoy.

  • Kirsten A.

I'm allergic to peanuts so Thai food is always a scare for me. One of the owners was out speaking to us and he was very knowledgeable to my allergy and even made alterations to their meals so that I was able to eat it. The Pad Thai minus peanuts is phenomenal. The atmosphere is so friendly and I can definitely see myself being a regular.

I really wish I could give more than 3 stars for this place but the food just didn't wow us. There are many Thai places in Salt Lake that are much better. Lack of flavor was our main issue.

I was craving Thai food and decided to try Sala because of a Yelp deal. I ordered take out Drunken noodle, and my partner ordered Chicken fried rice. I like spice, obviously, or I wouldn't order Thai food, but I also like flavor. I ordered the drunken noodle dish medium spice, but it was face-burning hot! Still, my main complaint would be the lack of flavor; Thai food should be bursting with flavor, and it just was not there. My partner's dish was not spicy at all (which is how it was ordered), but again, very little flavor. On the plus side, the restaurant looked clean and nice, and the employees were very friendly. I just think with all the Thai options in SLC, this one falls a little flat.

Great food and they provide a lot of meat with all their dishes. I will come back again tomorrow.

Dishes bland. Among Thai restaurants I've been to this is one of the worst. Nice staff and interior. They need to hire a new chef.

Great Thai food, local beers, never packed due to the tucked away in a corner location, but very nice inside. Decent service, limited open hours.

Whenever I want to play safe with my food, I go to Thai places and until now, no Thai restaurant disappointed me as much as Sala Thai. Service was nice and quick but food was terrible. Here is what we ordered Fried Tofu : Tofu it self was soggy and no salt or spice, They just took tofu and threw it in fryer and it was served with light soy sauce. Normal Thai fried tofu is crispy and served with Penut or palm sauce. Tom Yum Kha Soup : This was worst TomYum Soup, NO flavor, no aroma, heck there was no hint of Galanga or any other herb. no even boiled properly. All it had was Cabbage and chicken dipped in diluted coconut milk it was un coocked. Crispy Salmon : This was neither crispy nor Salmon, it was smelly catfish tail inside a heap of random veggies and light soy sauce. 1 stars for service, & 1 star for clean place 0 star for food

Great Thai food for lunch. The staff working very hard to find me exactly what I wanted. It was great they had a deal, but I would gladly pay full price.

This place is really, really good! I think the Pineapple Curry is amazing, the red curry is great, the pad Thai is also just great! Their lunch special is great for under 8.00! Friendly service, will def go back!

I've been here a couple times. The food is not bad. I like the glass noodles they have. Very flavorful. However just tonight when my friend and I visited again, we waited 15 minutes without water being served. The owner/waitress basically disappeared from our sight and left the room -about 6 tables of customers unattended for that long. We left at the end and went to another place.

    (2)
  • Marlee S.

Service is quick and friendly. Waitress was very nice. The food, on the other hand, is not. Had very bland yellow curry that didn't really taste like any other Thai yellow curry that I've had elsewhere (and I've had a lot). The great thing about Thai yellow curry is that you can usually count on it being the same flavor everywhere you go. But not here. Curry also came with broccoli in it which was very unusual - everywhere else I've been only includes onions, potatoes, carrots, and your choice of meat in the curry. Broccoli just doesn't fit. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't unpleasant tasting - it just wasn't flavorful or all that good. If you want great Thai, travel a few blocks over to Bangkok Terrace. I've never been disappointed by them!

This Panang was delicious however it was super spicy considering I asked for mild. They were very nice to process my order since they were closing soon but I've had better Thai food in SLC. The Panang is definitely worth trying if you like spicy however if you're a wimp like me don't do it. or if you're eating in emphasize that u want it mild and send it back if it's not. Didn't have a chance to try the rest of their menu but looks good!

I waited to write this review because I had to digest the past three visits, each of which had a different experience. If anything a good Thai restaurant has to be consistent to keep my attention. The first visit was okay. I really enjoy seafood so a good Po Tak (spicy broth with seafood) and it is one of my standard 'go to items' to see how a restaurant does. The best is still Little Thai (Polk at Broadway) in San Francisco but this is definitely a close second. Not a fan of Pad Thai, I usually stick with ordering the Pad Ga Pow with chopped chicken and a vegetarian yellow curry dish. These items did not disappoint at Sala Thai Kitchen, the only complaint was portion size so little or no leftovers to take home. The second visit was a little more dicey. After being seated I noted something crawling around in the jar of red peppers on the table. So, I moved to another table and tried to bring it to the attention of the manager who acted like nothing was wrong until I kept insisting he look 'inside' the jar. The third visit (yes there was a third visit) all I liked was the Po Tak, even it had a few less shrimp and seafood choices and more mushrooms than should be in any soup except mushroom soup. The portion sizes seemed even smaller as I left somewhat hungry. Will probably go again but it's losing favor as my go to Thai place in Salt Lake City.

My husband and I have been to Sala 5 different times with friends, family, or just by ourselves, and every time has been a great experience. We get seated right away, as they're usually not too busy. The wait staff checks up on us a couple times, but doesn't babysit us and watch us eat the whole time, which we appreciate. The food comes out hot and in a timely manner. We always get the Fresh Spring Rolls for an appetizer, the Pad See-Ew with chicken for our entrees, and the Mango Sticky Rice for dessert. I once tried something other than my usual, (Thai Beef Salad.) Never again. The portion size of the pad see-ew is a little small, compared to other Thai restaurants. But the mango sticky rice is a must try! I recommend it if you're ever in the area.

I eat Thai food for bold flavors, but I found my meal to be very bland. I had some sort of stir fry with chicken--the name escapes me--which was boring, and a red curry. The curry was pretty bad. It had too many spongy veggies that sapped all of the flavor from the liquid. Better to invest in some Mae plough curry paste--it'd be cheaper, quicker, and taste better.

  • Brad B.

Good food, atmosphere is okay, good location being close to brewvies, and such. The green papaya salad was good, spicer than most other ones I've had. Had the green curry which was very good, and had the drunken noodles which were very good in my opinion too. Worth going to try out, I would go back again.

  • L E.

Quick food prep, slow to take order. Seemingly inexperienced (and unhurried) servers spent a lot of time with each other. Our server didn't even eye our table as she passed, let alone check in on us. BUT - the food was good. Warning: "Medium" is hotter than you might expect.

Excellent food, great atmosphere and friendly service. Location is in a strip mall next door to Brewvies. Ordered Drunken noodles, it had fresh vegetables and superb spice combination. Ordered extra for leftovers tonight! Will be back very soon. Highly recommend!

I am unable to review any of the food being offered at sala thai. This is because the service was so bad, I never got to the eating of the meal part. Without any question, the worst service experience I have had anywhere in this city. And just generally poor, fairly juvenile communication skills on Jake, the owner/waiter/order taker. It is incredibly ironic that this place, of all the places, charge an automatic 18% gratuity (even for take-out orders). It's sort of like one last slap to the face from sala thai to any customer that's suffered through the mistake of patronizing them. I predict this business venture of Jake's be short lived and, entirely fated by his childish, pathetic and just silly way of conducting himself and this establishment.

    (1)
  • Suzanne C.

I called and placed a take out order Sunday evening around 8pm. Jake took my order and told me it would be 20 minutes. Perfect! Except, An hour later, foodless and confused, jake is telling me that he never put my order in to the kitchen, he lied to my boyfriend that after waiting 40 minutes it would just be another 2-3 minutes and that "stuff happens.. What do you want me to do about it?" And "I dont know what to tell ya". He got increasingly condescending and patronizing as he mocked me for addressing his dismissive and arrogant attitude about the situation. There's no shortage of amazing Thai food joints in this city that will gladly take my order and take my money, Sala Thai, however, won't be one of them. I'm not sure why Jake even bothers putting up an open sign, his struggling food establishment clearly doesn't want the business.

I love this little place! It's tucked right in between Brewvies and Dr. John's (ooh la la!) and it is a fantastic place to stop for lunch. They have tasty specials and the staff is very friendly. The Thai Iced Tea is great, and every dish i've had has ben delicious! Give it a try and then catch a show at the Brewvies.

  • Chris R.

Not very authentic tasting and gave me only one piece of shrimp and no scallops (as advertised) in their Pad Thai. Service was meh as I had to actually go and get my own chili sauce for my dish to spice it up. Only one waitress working at rush hour but not many customers (wonder why) so I guess it's expected. Not a phan.

  • Jonny F.

Service was ok, atmosphere was great! Very nice inside. The food was fairly bland and didn't have much chicken or spice. We had the pad-see-ew and pineapple chicken, both were ok but have had better.

  • Scott R.

I really enjoyed my trip here last night. Very friendly staff and extremely prompted service. We had a total of five dishes served to us. And all of them were delicious. I wish I could remember all the plates we received. But from the all we had, I can honestly say I bet everything is great. One thing that was particularly nice they did. We had a person in our group that has a peanut allergy. So they were nice and put all the crushed peanuts on the side. And offered to not cook the food in peanut oils. I have a feeling I will be back again soon.

We went to Sala because I'd seen it so many times when visiting Brewvies and wanted to try something new.It was pretty empty on a Saturday night! There was no wait as there were only 2 other couples in the restaurant. Since it was our first time and we didn't want to order too much: my boyfriend and I split an appetizer of fried spring rolls as well as an order of drunken noodles with tofu. The spring rolls were good but nothing absolutely special. There were 4 to an order and came with sweet and sour sauce. The drunken noodles were full of veggies and was very delicious. Their tofu was perfectly cooked (fried) as well as their veggies which were left with a little crunch - I like them that way. I loved that they were able to make the food vegan when I asked to omit all egg, and fish sauce. I will definitely come back again and try their curries. I like the fact that there was no wait on a Saturday night and the food that we tried was good.

They need to work on their consistency. Sometimes they would serve amazing food, but other times it is just so average or more like eatable. I've been here a few times and feel like they two different chefs.

  • John H.

My wife and I had a very quiet and flavorful experience at Sala this evening. The owner and his wife were friendly and welcoming throughout the entire evening. The atmosphere was quite relaxing and comfortable for a quiet dinner between two or even if you had a small group getting together for a social outing. The food was well portioned and full of tasty flavors. We ordered the deep-fried spring rolls which were perfectly crispy and complemented well with the sweet chili sauce. Also had the glass noodle salad which appeared freshly made and was filing like an entree. We then tried the pineapple curry with pork that too was excellent. I don't think that you could go wrong with any of the curries here. Upon next time we would love to try some of the other items from their menu that read interesting tasty!

We really enjoy Sala Thai...the food is delicious, affordable, good sized portions, quiet atmosphere, great service, and the manager is always friendly. Tonight the waitress forgot to add chicken to my meal, and the manager took care of the situation right away, giving us an order of satay chicken at no cost. Never disappointed. This place is great! :)

Can't say enough good things about this place. The first time I went for lunch it was empty so I wondered about it. When my Tom Yum soup arrived all my doubts evaporated in the aromatic steam from my bowl. It was fresh and delicious. The waitress was very helpful in answering questions and making recommendations. I go back whenever I have time to spend for lunch out. They have a lot of takeout going out the door, too.

Love this place! N8 is what I usually get but all of their dishes look and smell great. Waitstaff has always been polite and attentive. Food comes out fast. Never disappointed!

The mango sticky coconut rice dessert is AAAAMAZINNNGG! Generous portion too. Hub got a curry dish and loved it, though he would've preferred no big chunks of onion. I got a stir fry dish with chicken and veggies. Excellent, though a little too saucy. But I asked specifically for MILD, and they did great making it mild. So if you're a wimp on spicy things - no fear, you can still eat here! We got a great deal from a restaurant.com gift cert, so we only paid $17 for $42 worth of food. Otherwise I would've said the prices were high. Nice employees, nice atmosphere (I think - just saw it briefly, as we did a to-go order).

This place is located in a sketchy area.....it is right next to a huge lingerie store. But trust me this place is worth checking out. The people who work here are nice and service is good. Everything we ordered was good!! It is not the best Thai I have ever had but it is Salt Lake so good enough for me.

Let's get a review of someone who doesn't know these guys. Fabulous spot next to Brewvies, this is a great change of pace from the much loved bar type food. This could be a cool block for dining. These guys just opened up so the word hasn't gotten out so don't let the spaciousness make you think twice. I hope they keep the stage and use it in the future. The staff is pretty friendly and attentive. I started off with some curry puffs, one of my favorites! they were flaky and tasty but a bit mushy near the middle. The sauce it comes with was really tasty. I'd still recommend it though. For the main entree I decided on the Koi Soy with chicken, because they are the THIRD Thai place that says they are the only ones to make Koi Soy. :) It looked great coming out, I liked that they use two noodles in the dish, crispy and the rice noodles that you'd find in Pad Thai. As I stirred the noodles around I discovered it definitely was chicken, a whole drumstick was in there. The meat was just falling off the bone, yum. The curry has decent flavor and left a slight tingle on my lips. Another yum. It's a solid 3.5 stars based on my first experience. I would really need to go back a couple of more times to see if it deserves a solid four and maybe even a 5 star. So if you want a place kinda downtown but don't want the hassle of downtown parking, give these folks a try. Especially for lunch since it looks like they have lunch specials.

I love the Sala Thai Kitchen. The Pad See-Ew and Drunken Noodles are delish. And the Thai Iced Tea is as delicious as it is beautiful--not to mention the best price for Thai iced tea I've found. Friendly staff and nice atmosphere.

Excellent! I have been searching for a Thai restaurant that serves Khao Soi ever since my last trip to Northern Thailand. Whenever I have guests in from out of town I plan to bring them for this rare and delicious meal. The six I have brought so far have all loved it. Ask them to tone it down if you don't enjoy it spicy.

  • Mandee J.

We ordered carry out, one noodle dish and one fried rice. The service was fine, prompt and courteous. Other than the server dropping a lid for a small takeout sauce container and then putting it back in the pile of clean ones, we had no problem with the service. The noodle dish had broccoli even though it was nowhere in the description. But by far the biggest complaint is that this wasn't nearly Thai food. The noodles themselves were great, but the dish had absolutely no flavor. Same for the fried rice, no flavor what so ever. I would have fed it to my baby no worries it had so little spice. Really was a horrible experience because it really defeats the whole purpose of eating Thai food. If you love this food, you should avoid all Thai food in other places because you obviously hate flavor. Nice people, great Thai food for infants/toddlers.

I adore Sala Thai. I've been going there for two years now and have loved everything I've tried. The service has always been great, and I happen to prefer the quiet atmosphere.

Had to ask for a lot of extra spice. Ambience left something to be desired. Owner's kid playing on top of the bar counter was truly annoying and unappetizing. Service was top notch though. Sweet Thai tea was amazing.

  • Nic H.

Had the pad-see-ew lunch special. I've had better, I've had worse. I got it take-away but the place seems alright. Really, everything about it is mediocre - staff was okay, food was okay, ambiance was okay. It's convenient to quite a few hotels and not too ridiculously priced. I'm probably spoiled with the ridiculous amount of good thai available at home. I'd probably come back if I was drunk.

I'm simply amazed at how different Thai food is from restaurant to restaurant. You can order the same dish and it's fun to see everyone's different take on things. That was definitely in play as we ate at Sala the other night. Of all the Thai restaurants in town, this one probably varied the most from the others. I believe mathematicians call it the outlier. Ain't nothing wrong with being an outlier, but know that you'll get a different take on things here than you might elsewhere. We'll start with a few of the basics. We had the Pad Thai and the noodles were wide and delicious. The sauce was redder than I've ever seen it. Not neon red, but nearing marinara red. Luckily they didn't taste a thing like marinara, but it was a lighter taste than I've had before. We also had a yellow curry. The flavor wasn't as rich as I've had, and if I could make only one teency suggestion it would be to have a thicker curry. Maybe it was just our batch, but the curry was thin, and a little watery. Big chunks of potato and small manageable chunks of chicken were right on, though. Tom ka? Hard to do it wrong. I was pleased that this had that lovely zing to it, and only wished it had more mushrooms. But they were very generous with the shrimp so I got no complaints. Good heavens I love that soup. Tasty spring rolls were served with a sweet and sour sauce. We asked for a little peanut sauce as well. There were some in our group of six that believe spring rolls are merely a deliver device for peanut sauce. I'm not one of them, but I did dip once or twice to try it. Pineapple rice? I'm not a raving fan of this dish, but you won't be disappointed if you do try it. It was solid and a big hit around the table. Finally, the kow soy. Oh, blessed kow soy. It blows my mind that this is the same dish I've had elsewhere. I've tried the other two places in Utah that serve this dish (that I know of) and they have all been vastly different. Sala's was darn tasty and was my favorite dish of the night. They served it with lots of crunchy noodles on top, but they were thin and spidery. Very fun, and very different. It had a nice spice to it as well. There's lots of menu out there, but this one is well worth consideration. This is a nice space and filled my Thai needs well. And I'm very glad to see that someone else is doing kow soy. I should also mention that prices are really fair. I don't think there were many items over $13 on the menu, with a good chunk landing in the $9.99 range. Not bad for dinner!

Lets start off with the food: Tom Kha, Kow Soi and Pineapple Shrimp Curry. All good tasting, all lukewarm. The soup arrived after the Kow Soi but before the Curry. I hate getting my app during my dinner! Lets get to why this place is so unworthy: At 8 pm on a Friday night, Sala ran out of clean silverware and plates. Thus, my guy and I were expected to eat the Kow Soi out of a flintstones bowl with two huge tablespoons and no plates. Slippery Noodles? Tablespoons? WTF. We finally got the waiter's attention (not easy) and asked if any chopsticks could be found--two minutes later (food is getting colder) he delivered two sets of dripping wet chopsticks from his bare hands. WTF! The Tom Kha was syrupy thick but tasty--until about 30 minutes later when the upset stomach set in. I think the soup is being re-batched, not fresh-batched. My opinion. But my hunny's tummy wasn't right for 24 hours. WTF!! Three WTF's in one meal is unacceptable. Sala.........you're OUT! I am sorry I ever cheated on the Tea Rose Diner.

Vegetarian's review - Got a take out of their lunch combo yesterday. The combo included one spring roll, steamed rice, a curry and a veggie soup or house salad. The veggie soup tasted a lot like pho but am pretty sure they used chicken stock, coz I could smell it, thanks to my snooty nose. The spring roll was nice and crispy. I got L5, not sure what it's called, but it was veggies stirfried with tofu in a garlic sauce. It was excellent. Spicy, like I had asked for. Unfortuately, vegetarians can only pick from 2 options, the rest have fish sauce or oyster sauce in them. It is a good deal for $7.35. The waitress was very polite and my order was ready in 5 mins. It is a fairly big restaurant with a nice bar . Good for dine in too. If not for the chicken stock I would give them 4 stars.

I went to Sala Thai Kitchen with some co-workers the other day for lunch. The inside of the restaurant is nice but sparsely furnished with tables, roomy booths, and a few photos and artworks on the wall. The lunch menu offered many options and was priced right too. For $8 we got soup or salad, our main entree with rice and two small shrimp dumplings. I ordered my favorite Thai dish for lunch, yellow curry with chicken and vegetables (broccoli, potatoes, and onions.) The flavor was really good (although the curry was a little watery) and the chicken was well prepared and not rubbery like some Thai restaurants. The lunch portions were also very generous and we all had more than enough to eat. I have been really impressed with Sala Thai Kitchen and I would definitely eat here again. It is a great little Thai place.

Location: Between Brewvies and an exotic lingerie store I thought this place MUST have some character to it but overall I found it a bit "meh" and the ambience must work only for evening hours. I went at sundown, it was empty and much too quiet and I think my review would have been better if I had gone at night. Take out: I am assuming it was the owner(?) who took my order and kept saying "5 to 10 minutes, no maybe 2-3 minutes" when I asked how long the wait was. In reality I expected 20 mins and waited 20 mins. The weird time expectation put me off... it felt like haggling for take out... Food: The food was average. I ordered pad thai with tofu. It was enjoyable - not great, not bad. I also ordered the shrimp dumplings which were mostly gooey pods of shrimp paste and dough, unappealing and even after drowning them out with side sauces, I couldn't eat them. I would NOT recommend them. I also ordered the veg. tempura appetizer and it was more of a fried dough then the regular tempura batter. The medley of veggies was good but again - I wanted tempura. Overall - the only way i'll try this place again is if a friend says that this was just a miss and that they usually average with hits. The reviews seem a bit mixed overall anyways. Just sayin'

Based on good buzz, my boyfriend, a couple of friends, and I hit up this place one Saturday evening. I guess word is already getting out because it was pretty packed when we walked in. You can definitely tell this place used to be a dance club because it kind of has that wedding reception feel to it with the chairs on the dance floor and such. It's a shame the local laws won't let them make better use of the large, ornate bar area in the back. That could be a spot for some awesomeness. We started with a bottle of wine. The list is small but does the trick. Only thing was that we ordered what was listed as the Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling and got Ste. Chapelle. That's no big deal, because I think the one we got is superior. I mentioned this only because this is the second Thai restaurant where that has happened, so it kind of amused me. For our appetizers, we went with spring rolls and the angle shrimp (not angel!) Both were really nice. The spring rolls were very fresh tasting, and the shrimp rolls tasty, served with some tempura vegetables to keep it interesting. I can't remember the names of all of our entrees. Mine had pork, rice noodles, and various vegetables in broth and it was definitely solid. Our friends got chicken fried rice and pad thai, which they were very pleased with. I can't remember what my boyfriend got, but it was kind of similar to pad thai. I'd say that was the best dish of the night. Everything was very high quality. We went with the fried banana dessert, which looked like egg rolls filled with banana-y goodness. I loved them. It was served with excellent vanilla bean ice cream (with sprinkles on top!) On the night we went in, we definitely got some of that New Restaurant Service. I believe the owner was our waitress, and she definitely wanted to keep us happy, but they seemed a bit overwhelmed with all the people in there. So dishes came out at different times (my entree came about 5 minutes before anyone else's, for example) and there was just a bit of a frenzy in general. I've heard of other people visiting on quieter nights and getting excellent service, so I expect it's something they'll fix soon. And even on a night like this, the services was still light years ahead of a certain other Thai restaurant that is super tasty but has the worst service in existence. So we all dug the place, and dug the location. We'll be back for sure.

I went this place because my bf purchased $250 worth restaurant certificate from restaurant.com a year ago. We were browsing decent restaurant from the website and we found this place, so we decide to try. He ordered pad thai from the lunch menu, and I ordered pineapple fried rice from normal(?) menu. I should've take the pictures but our phones died... Anyway, seriously Pad thai was... not as good as I usually eat from other Thai restaurant. All I can taste was only ketchup..... I don't recommend pad thai.. (Maybe it's different in dinner menu? Idk..) But the one I ordered was okay. There's few pineapples, but it was better than the pad thai. For desert, I ordered Mango sticky rice and it was awesome! I am so not big fan of coconut, but the sweet coconut sauce on the fresh mango and sticky rice was so delicious! I totally recommend it. Overall, this place was okay. Maybe we will try again later:)

Thai food the way it's supposed to be...made by a white guy. Went here with my mother for lunch and even she found something she enjoyed. I went for the green curry with beef. The only drawback to this dish is it is labeled as spicy but it is about as warm as my mother-in-law (IE: frigid, I'm not playing here you can farm icicles in this woman's stare). The flavor is right on target and the spring rolls are money. The curry comes with a bit of delicious eggplant, green and red bell peppers, and some lovely bamboo shoots. The server was a wonderful man with a great tattoo on his arm. He was the only server I saw for the entire restaurant so the service was a little slow and that is why I didn't give it 5 stars. He was friendly and made sure we enjoyed our meal. I will go back and to truly enjoy my meal to it's fullest.....I will not be bringing my mother. 30 minutes at a table with that woman and you too would want to wash your mouth out with buckshot.

Very good but weird and unfinished dining area which lacks any kind of cozyness or atmosphere. Seems they do mostly take out in this economically punished strip mall. However, the food is good and the people are Thai so you're getting the real deal, not a China knock-off. And most family owned Thai eateries are into the food and substance, and not experts in ambience. I started with the curry puffs which were OK, a little mushy in the middle, but flavorful. My main was the veggie (non Tofu!) red curry turned up to about a 4*, that was excellent and the ingredients were 100% fresh and had plenty of great essence.

bought a living social deal for this place and was eager to try another thai place in salt lake after my last disappointing experience at a thai restaurant. first of all the location is in a strip mall downtown which looks run down, but the inside was pleasantly modern. not to mention plenty of parking which is always nice. we were greeted immediately and we chose to sit in a booth. bf ordered tom yum as always and i chose the lunch combination pad thai with shrimp (minus the chicken and tofu). my salad came out which was good and flavorful with nice presentation. then our tom yum came out and even though i've never seen cabbage in the soup before it was still okay. not the best soup i've had, but acceptable for tom yum. the dumpling (that came with the lunch combo) was good, but the dipping sauce was disgusting and tasted like hoisin sauce with a lot of salt. when my pad thai came out i knew that this was not an authentic thai place seeing that my dish was ORANGE (see attached photo). pad thai is not suppose to be orange. when i ate some it was sickeningly sweet and had such a heavy sauce. my bf thinks that they put sweet and sour sauce in it. whatever was in it was gross. after a few bites (trying to convince myself that maybe part of it could be good) i decided to stop eating since i was not enjoying my meal. when offered a to go box for my pad thai i declined which is saying something. i'm asian and have been taught to NEVER waste food, but i was not going to bring that pad thai anywhere near my home. service was okay. server was friendly, but seeing that he was the only one during lunch time he never got around to ask us how our food was. we finally had to flag him down to get the check and when it came it was incorrect. however, he apologized and corrected it quickly. overall okay service, but horrible food.

First time here and it was just down the street from where I was staying. Normally not in this neck of woods so this was a bit of a gamble. First off I really wanted to like this place and the waitress was actually Thai so I had some high hopes. Unfortunately in my book it didn't cut it. Started with the classic Tom Yum and in ihho the balance was off (unlike a previous reviewer thought) - good amount of spice but the acidity was pretty much non existent) I do have to say thought the chicken was cooked well and not dry and all the expected ingredients such as lemongrass was present. The balance was just off. As with any Thai place I visit for the first time I always get the pad thai as a litmus test. The noodles were cooked perfectly but the sauce they used was essentially ketchup and nothing else. So no fish sauce to give it some more body and character and certainly none of those tiny shrimp used for flavoring. Again the chicken and shrimp were cooked well it was just a lack of balance - good Thai should have a balance of salty, sweet and sour. This pad Thai was all sweet. Bummed as I was hoping for some greatness in this hole in the wall... Now I can only assume the restaurant has adjusted its seasoning for the salt lake palate it's just a shame that it had to come to that. I am quite critical so this place might be your cup of tea..it just wasn't mine.

I have been to Sala Thai twice now and both times were really, really good. The first time, I had a pad thai and a pad grapow. I hate to admit it (since my standards are so high), but this is probably the best quality pad thai I have had in SLC. It was very well-balanced. Sauce was not overpowering but not bland either. Nice mix of meat and vegetables. Not excessively oily but moist enough to keep it from going too dry. The same could be said of the grapow. Since it was fried, I expected a little more oil, which there was, but not a whole lot more. Certainly still edible for someone like me who has an extreme aversion to oil. Not too salty yet not too bland either. The second time, I had a pra ram and a yellow curry. Again, they did not fail to perform. The pra ram was well-balanced like the other two dishes I had previously. The yellow curry was spiced up just a teeny bit, as I had asked, but not overly anything. Not overly creamy, not overly oily, not overly salty. And the mix of meat and vegetables was just about right. So really, I guess if I had to choose one word to sum up their food (and maybe some people might not like it this way), it's that it is "balanced." Straight middle of the road (which I like). Two things not going so much for Sala Thai are 1) location and 2) prices. The location probably can't be helped, but it's next to a massive lingerie shop in a seedier part of Downtown. Quiet but not in a good way, I guess. The prices could be helped, however, and I suggest that they lower them. Yes, the quality is outstanding, but the prices are very high, considering that the portions are extremely SMALL. I do not doubt that many people may have been scared away by them. I happened to have a Living Social deal, so it tempered the price shock just a bit. Will I go there again? Definitely (if I don't mind splurging a bit). IMHO, quality-wise, it is the best Thai place I have been to so far in SLC. I would have to rank it as my second most favorite Thai place, right behind Thai Siam, only because I am a cheap skate, and if it comes between low prices and large quantity versus high prices and small quantity, the first beats out the second.

Hands down this place has the best soup in town. The vegetable soup that comes as as option with their lunch specials is AHH-Mazing!! The broth has so much flavor with black pepper and that oh-so-good umami flavor is pleasant and savory. The broth is good enough to drink alone, but then they stuff it full of crisp vegetables, even broccoli and baby corn and then top it with fresh cilantro. I want an entire vat of this stuff! The lunch special is a great deal and you get your entree with rice, soup or salad (why in the world would you get salad when you can have that soup???) and a dumpling. They will sub the dumpling for their fried spring roll if you ask. The whole plate is under $8. Value at it's finest. The service is also friendly and accommodating. I love panang curry and was disappointed that it wasn't offered as a lunch special. When I mentioned this to my server (who I think was actually the owner) he offered to make an exception and gave me the panang as a lunch combo. I love the philosophy of "making the customer happy." On my second trip I was a little disappointed when I ordered the Pad Thai on the menu. The sauce was a little too sweet and sticky for my liking, but the soup was worth the trip. By the way, did I mention that I love the soup here? Atmosphere is bright and clean. It's a little cold, but I kind of like the minimalist approach as compared to some other places that are crammed full of knick-knacks placed on anything that will stand still.

In town for a trade show and wanted some good Thai. Based on Yelp, this seemed like about the best bet and wasn't too far from my hotel. The location next to the lingerie boutique is interesting. Interior is nice enough. I was quickly greeted and seated. After a few minutes with the menu I decided I'd order, what has become my "norm": salad rolls and drunken noodles, medium. Their salad rolls indicated they were steamed and were called Fresh Spring Rolls, so I made sure to ask whether they were made with the rice paper wrappers I was expecting (try and avoid as much Gluten as possible). During that conversation, the server even asked if I was Celiac (I'm not). So he writes down that I want the salad rolls in red pen on his little notebook and some Medium spicy chicken Drunken noodle. I also had to clarify that I wanted the wide rice noodles, as they offer it with "pasta" also (maybe should have been a red flag). So, maybe 10-15 minutes later out comes with Drunken noodles. I ask the girl that delivered them (not my initial server) about the rolls. She says she'll check. Away she goes to the back, out she comes...to table after table, but NOT my table. Meanwhile, I'm checking out the noodles. The terribly anemic looking, bland noodles. I've never ONCE asked for the server to bring out some extra heat at a Thai restaurant. Medium is about my limit. This plate of noodles had NO spice and almost no flavor. I finally get the attention of my server and ask about the rolls and for some spice. He returns with some spice (which did the trick!) and tells me he "must not have heard me when I ordered the rolls". Hmm, interesting that we had a conversation and I watched you right it down, on the table. OK. So the noodles are now decent after I self spice them. I finish the plate. And then a minute later, when I'm actually looking around wanting my check to get the hell out, here come the rolls. Are you kidding me?! I'm done with the meal, and you bring out the appetizers? I tell the guy I need a to-go container. He brings it, I put them in, but I'm intrigued by the sauce they serve with the rolls, simply referred to as "homemade sauce". It is terrible. I had one bite, and after I paid the bill, actually left the rolls on the table. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. It shares a parking lot with a sports pub, and I drove out thinking how I wished I would have gone to the pub instead of Sala Thai.

Came to SLC from the Bay Area for a meeting and happened to see this Thai restaurant tucked in the corner of a strip mall between an adult novelty store called Dr. Johns and a movie theater that seems to advertise selling beer with their movies! Obviously this was the universe telling me to eat at this restaurant - what else could it be? It was just 3pm and the owner was just starting to close the door (as they close between 3 and 5p) but when she saw me walking over she held the door. When I asked if she was closing and offered to come back another time, she opened the place back up for me! That's pretty nice in my book. Whenever I go to a new Thai restaurant, I order one thing - Pad Kee Mow (Drunken Noodles). It's kind of the benchmark I use to rate them against each other. Overall I'd give them a 8/10 rating for the dish. the vegetables were all fresh and it was very well put together. I'd definitely go back - and probably will since I'm here for 5 days and vegetarian choices aren't exactly the most common thing I'm seeing. Thanks Sala Thai for staying open for little ol' me.

This is some of the best Thai food I've had in awhile. Khao soi is my favorite dish and theirs ranks among the best I've had. The curry is wonderfully spiced albeit a bit thick for this particular dish, although the thickness provides a wonderful and tasty broth packed with a variety of flavors. It was fantastic! My only complaint is a lack of pickled cabbage. I asked about the pickled cabbage and apparently it wasn't a favorite among the regulars but it is a part of the dish and I wish they had it available for the Khao Soi fanatics like me. Our spring rolls were fantastic and my boyfriends noodle soup with red pork was fantastic. Again the broth was flavorful and complex, an exciting change even from the noodle houses we experienced in Los Angeles. I highly recommend giving this place a try, and if you like curry and noodles, definitely order the khao soi.

Finally authentic Thai Food in Salt Lake! I loved what the owners did to the old Zanzibar location. Next to Brewvies so plenty of parking. The Green curry was spicy enough without me having to add spices like i usually do at other thai places. No sugar added either like most other places. The owners are very nice and i will be supporting this locally owned business for sure! The mango sticky rice as a dessert is a must even though i'm not a dessert person, i hate most of it!

I love the food from Sala Thai and recommend it regularly. The pad see ew has wonderfully cooked noodles in a rich, unctuous black bean sauce. And as a self-avowed egg lover, so the addition of egg to any dish is likely to add a star in my eyes. This dish really seems to be my Thai comfort food and is one that I always order. The massaman curry has wonderful potatoes and chicken bathed is a delicious coconut-based sauce. The potatoes have always been nicely cooked, tender and infused with the curry flavor. I've been a little disappointed in the satay chicken skewers the past couple times I visited. They were a little bit drier than I would have liked--not as moist and tender as I like. But the peanut sauce is well balanced and full of flavor. I recommend against it as a first date location as it's right next door to a lingerie shop. Yup, that was an awkward moment. Overall, Sala is my preferred Thai restaurant in SLC.

Restaurant has little to no decor and is very spacious. There was only 1 server when I was there, but she managed nicely. Timing on the service was not great as my appetizer and my main dish arrived essentially at the same time. My meal started with the Steamed Thia Dumplings. The dumplings were like mini Chinese Dim Sum. They were good, but nothing special, however the house made Black Bean Sauce that came with them for dipping was outstanding. My main dish was Pad See Ew with Shrimp. I had it medium spicy. It was extremely tasty. It was what I call "sneak up on you" spicy. First bite - nice but not spicy, but by the third bite - oh yeah, this is spiced nicely. I finished with the Sticky Rice with Mango. It had a very nice balance between the warm Sticky Rice and the cool Mango. Since I don't go to a restaurant for the decor and the service was fine and the food was very very tasty, I will definitely be back. This is certainly a place that I'll tell my friends about.

After my very first visit, I would have given it 3.5 stars. I was a bit on the fence, but I thought it was a-okay that night. Being Thai and having been exposed to awesome and authentic Thai food, I would like to think I know my Thai food! My husband and I ordered the spring rolls to start and as always, spring rolls should be served with peanut sauce. No biggie if it isn't, but I dislike restaurants that say "homemade" or "special" sauce with spring rolls. It always turns out to be some mixture of hoisin sauce. Disappointing! We also ordered the green papaya salad, beef salad, and drunken noodles. First off, we ordered it spicy and they definitely didn't disappoint! Loved that! I thought they did a good job with the papaya salad and trying to make it like what you might find it in a Thai home kitchen. It had peanuts/cashews and some green beans in it, which was great. The beef salad was also spicy as ordered and was okay - some of the beef slices were a bit dry as if it hasn't been sitting for awhile. The drunken noodles were decent, but nothing special. From where I sat, I was able to peek through to the kitchen. I saw the server go back and reheat some sticky rice in the microwave. Sad. It wasn't particularly busy so the service was just fine that night. My sister came to visit from CA and we were in the mood for my mom's real cooking but alas, had to settle with Sala Thai. I can't seem to find a Thai place I love since moving to SLC. We were seated by an older, Caucasian man who was not particularly friendly. He wanted to seat us at a regular table, but we asked to sit in one of the empty booths. He rudely commented, "fine, if you want to stuff yourselves in there." Really? There were 4 adults and all of us are of average build. Nonetheless, throughout the entire visit I observed him serving and mingling with a few other tables. He looked like he was some sort of manager or owner as he ordered the timid server around and sat down at the bar to drink and play on his cell phone. He waited on the other tables and refilled glasses of water.... except for ours. We went through long droughts and only got refills whenever we could catch the one server gal running around. I also had an issue with the guy when I overheard him say a few things that were rather demeaning to the girl. Seriously, don't talk to your staff like that... and especially don't do it in front of guests. Not only was the guy a jerk and service was terrible.. the food was too. We had pad thai, drunken noodles, papaya salad, sukiyaki, and the pad puck ruam. All were bland (except for the papaya salad) and the sticky rice must have been old because it was heated, but was as hard as a rock. Crunchy sticky rice = old rice. Aside from the food and service.. the restaurant is in an odd place being right next to an adult lingerie store, but at least there's parking! Although parking may or may not be an issue depending on how busy Brewvie's is next door. The interior of the restaurant is actually much nicer than it might look from the outside. There are a few booths and plenty of tables. There is a really nice looking bar, but doesn't seem to be really used for that.

This place is definitely worth going to! The semi-trashy strip mall location provided an initial reaction of low expectations, but we were pleasantly surprised by the clean atmosphere, good service, and up-to-par food! The lunch portions were reasonably priced at under $8.00, especially considering they came with a spring roll and the choice of a small salad or vegetable soup. The vegetable soup was remarkably good (awesome broth!), and my yellow curry was as good as any I've had in Salt Lake (one note: it did have broccoli in it, which I haven't seen in other yellow curries before). My partner felt the same about his drunken noodles, and we both agreed that everything we were served was fresh (especially worth mentioning, as we dined there right before they closed).

Sala Thai is by FAR my favorite Thai food restaurant in the Salt Lake City area (I've been to most Thai restaurants in Salt Lake). My friends and I went there and each got different entrees, and we were all very pleased. I got the Kaow Soi (which I had never had before) and OH MY it was SO GOOD!! I will definitely be going back again soon! The server was very friendly, too (and he had a cool accent!). Very good experience!

In my opinion, this was average Thai food. The place is comfortable, and the service is good. There was a server, who appeared to be a manager or owner, carrying a young child around while serving food. I would go there again.

Judging by the reviews this must be the "Carrie" of Thai restaurants in Salt Lake City - two different restaurants in the same location. Unfortunately my experience was on the manic pathological side of the spectrum. OK, we ordered Panang Curry and Ladnar Noodles. I was amazed to see the curry arrive as a plate scattered with a few vegetables and shrimp with a garnish of curry. I'd estimate two tablespoons. A cup of rice included but hardly enought for one person much less two of us. We ordered additional rice (not jasmine or basmati either, just long grain rice). The waitress brought out a cup of additional curry sauce that did not taste as if it had the same ingredients as the curry "garnish" that came on the plate. She also brought additional rice in the form of a "wad" of rice wrapped in cellophane that had been reheated in a microwave. When I unwrapped the rice "wad" it tasted as bad as it looked. I should have had the presence of mind to take a photo of this dish. Truly Amazing! Next, the Lad Nar noodles were equally dismaying to me. First of all we had to dig under the veggies and chicken pieces to actually find the two or three noodles in the dish (were they running out in the kitchen?) The brown gravy that provides the signature flavor of the dish had the taste and consitency of mucous. This was totally inedible. The food at Sala thai is probably the worst example of Thai cuisine that I've ever had the displeasure of experiencing. The only saving grace is that it is located next to the the Langierie / Sex Toy Superstore.

I hate to admit this, but it's really unfair for me visit unfamiliar Thai places after having found my favorite Thai place. But alas, Groupon encouraged me to give Sala Thai a try, although, not without doing my research on Yelp first. It seemed ilke coming here would be a safe dinner, which it was. Let's start with the cons, because I like to end on positive notes if I can: - Massamun curry was very bland and had barely a hint of spice. I think they probably watered it down for my boyfriend, but I would have appreciated to be asked what spice level I would prefer. Also, it came in chicken, which would not be a problem, except for the fact we had already ordered a chicken dish and specifically requested beef. - Angle (spelled like on the menu) shrimp rolls were nothing to write home about, a bit too greasy for my liking, but served with solid sauces and fried veggies, which is a plus. - Koi Soy... far too difficult to eat, when you already have a thick sauce, noodles need to be more easily distinguished, especially because of the dry noodles on top. All of the noodles in the curry broth were too clumped together. Although, I did much prefer the flavor of this dish compared to the Massamun. But unfortunately, I got too tired to eat, plus, all of the curry and grease was starting to make me feel a little lethargic. Now with the pros! - Absolutely loved the service! The waitstaff was extremely friendly, refilled my water regularly, brought food out perfectly timed. - Space! The space is very open, modern, and while it felt a little awkard with the empty areas, I felt completely at home. - Location! Next to Brewvies and Doctor Johns, while I don't frequent Doctor John's as much as I do Brewvies, I think it's great that there's plenty of parking and other food options available while waiting for a movie if you're not feeling bar food that day (which would be strange if you were going to Brewvies). - Sticky Rice with Fresh Mango Dessert. Perfect way to end a heavy meal, the rice was extremely sticky, the way I like it when covered with coconut milk. And the mangoes were just tart enough to pop out from the sweeter flavors. Overall, I like Sala Thai, I don't love it yet, but it's definitely worth a few more tries off the lighter side of the menu. I'll be back!

My new favorite thai in Salt Lake! I love this place. Some of the food is on the plainer side, but still tasty. The spring rolls are a must - I could eat 5 orders of those alone! I've tried just about all the curries. The Massaman is good, one of the simpler ones I've tried from them. I prefer the green curry (or the yellow if you are looking for something milder). The drunken noodles are excellent. They have a good amount of spice to them - the residual kind of spice that you don't really pick up on until a couple minutes into eating it and your mouth is on fire. Pad see-ew is a less spicy alternative. I've tried something new everytime I've gone (as well as revisited some favorites) - and I haven't found a thing I don't like!! I just hope this place gets busier - it's always pretty empty when I go in and I don't want to see it go!

I was a bit worried as I was the only customer in the place. A very pleasant surprise as they had good food. The spicy seafood soup was 7 out of 10. The chicken and veggie stir fry don't know the exact Thai name was a solid 8 of 10. They have a very good mix an use of spices. Worth a try for you locals!

Very good Thai food. Odd location. Service was efficient but only a little friendly.

Me and my lady love this joint! The masaman chicken is soooooo good. Driving by the place I don't think I would have ever have stopped in, but we had a groupon. The interior is clean and a great environment. The owner works the floor taking orders and seems like a genuinely nice guy. Since we had the groupon, we've been back a couple more times. We'll continue going there.

The BEST Thai place in Salt Lake City! I've tried them all, even Chanon (which I like, don't get me wrong). If you love Thai food - go here. Guaranteed satisfaction. The service is outstanding the people are great. The shrimp dumplings and curries are amazing!! I will be back here all the time; come and join me!
